C-Ya Blogger

Hello friends!

If you missed the post before this I encourage you to click HERE to find out why I'm no longer blogger with Blogger.

From here on out you can find me over at WordPress. My blog title is still the same though things look a little different. The Blessings of Modern Domestication can be found via this link:

http://theblessingsofmoderndomestication.wordpress.com/

You'll have to excuse the lack of wow factor when you arrive over at WP. I'm in the process of learning WP platform and setting up. Rather than transfer my blog over there I simply started from scratch so it's looking a little bald and stark. I've no idea how to set up Google Friends connect etc. But I'm still there. Be sure to grab my new blog feed when you head over and drop a comment so I know you've found me :-) I'm with great hope that WP won't disappoint and that I won't have the same problems hash up in my new location.

Soooo, I will no longer be blogging HERE. I'm not sure the best way to notify those that still follow my blog so I've opted to leave this post (and blog) up for a while. As noted in my previous post I won't be able to continue to log-in here with Blogger to blog. So from here on out this blog is officially retired.

I'll leave this up for a while with hope that many of you find the notice and come visit me over at WP. When I feel like it I'll head over my in-laws to delete the blog for eternity.

So what are you waiting for? Come visit me over at

Good Bye??

Dear Blog Friends,
So I don't know if you're going to stop following my blog after reading this but I'll understand if crickets start chirping, off you go...
Sorry, I gotta vent here. (and Blogger / FireFox if you're paying attention I hope you see the damage you've done)
I just spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out what's NOT  been working with my blogger account. Logging in, oh, countless times being greeted by Blogger's main Error page. I've grown tired of seeing it's notice flashing in my face. I tried countless help strategies.... Everything from deleting cookies, signing in, shutting down computer, updating computer, reading blogger help forums, etc. etc. Than I ventured to do a little internet search to see if others are having problems similar to mine. Finding the common underlying problems I've been having. On my end my computer including FireFox update said there were no new updates but alas I was able to dig up some dirt...

My facebook posting as of 2:29 am:
Grumble, grumble... trying to figure out technology ends in a bust... 2AM and I've reached my limit only to find my problems with Blogger have to do with this... (and the fact that my computer's OS is not eligible for the latest FireFox update.) Errr http://news.softpedia.com/news/Blogger-Will-Drop-Support-for-Firefox-3-5-IE7-and-Safari-3-211793.shtml
news.softpedia.com
Blogger Will Drop Support for Firefox 3.5, IE7 and Safari 3
    • To sum this up, my computer is apparently to old for the latest update to my selected operating system. Which leads to my inability to keep using Blogger. What a bunch of turds!

    • Thanks FireFox for this message, booo: "Unfortunately the latest version of Firefox isn't compatible with your computer's operating system." Hey FireFox: my 5.5 yr old iMac 5,2 still kicks butt!
    •
Sooo when I try to give feedback to FireFox I get this message: "Oh! So, you want to offer us feedback on Firefox. Thank you, but you'll need to be on the latest version." ERRR! Grumble, grumble. Hey firefox I'll gladly do so if you are willing to foot the bill for a new computer, tar, tar.
I've been a faithful Mac User and won't change. I've been faithful FireFox user as well. I guess they have no problem kicking some dirt back at me for following along. Next computer will be a Mac. But they're so expensive, have you seen the price tag? Well worth it if you have $$ to toss at the latest technology. I'm the kinda gal who wears her jeans till they have holes and rips. I tend to like them just when they're broken in. I'm that way with a lot of things. If it's got a whole, stitch it. If it's got a crack, glue it. I don't run out and buy new. I thought this computer would tread longer than five / six years. Well my computer is ticking on just fine! It's become a software and date game I suppose and I'm on the loosing side. Listen folks, I don't have an ipad, or iphone, or mac or  this and that. I have a basic ___ and that's all I need. (am I sounding old) I'm a busy mom who's found her niche as a homesteader/homemaker. The internet has it's perks. The cable guys who keep trying to get us to bundle get wide eyed when they find out that I don't subscribe to 180+ TV channels. We don't even have cable TV over here. The computer and internet give us what we need. When we want to watch TV we get free D-TV with our rabbit ears. 20 channels is enough for us. I don't mean to put anyone down if they splurge in this area. Each family knows what they need or get what's best fit.  I'm just saying my family has no need for the latest and greatest tech toy simply because they're available. I've been happy thus far the way things have naturally progressed. Click update on the computer and batta-bing, we're plodding along happy as a clam.
Ok rambling. Sorry.
Each time I tried to log into Blogger I got The Error Message. FINALLY, I was able to log in to type this post (without regrets). I was also given a little pop-up message that says, "Your browser is no longer supported by Blogger. Some parts of Blogger will not work and you may experience problems. If you are having problems, try Google Chrome."
May experience problems? Ha!
What they really mean to say is I need to download yet another product to use the one that's been working fine for me all this time. Your Mac version is not favorable as it's only a year out in usage. I'm stingy with my computer and like to wait until the programing quarks are worked out. It cuts out a lot of hassle on my end. Why the sudden change? Doesn't anyone realize we're in a defaulting economy? I don't have extra cash lying around to buy a new computer just to blog or surf the internet with the latest browser update. I hardly have the time to blog. So when able I try to enjoy it. This whole bit of shenanigans is driving me batty. My computer isn't really in the stone age. I go to the library and they still have computers waaaaay older than mine. What gives? Don't "I" get to decide when my computer is to old and isn't serving me right anymore? What, every 5 years I'm going to need to buy a new computer to use the internet consecutively over the next millennium? Sounds like someones got deep pockets to me. They're all in conspiracy. I'm quite frustrated. We live with in our means, at least we try as best possible. We thankfully have no debt aside from our mortgage and a few remaining months on a car loan. We don't mirror the the family advertised in commercials asking, "more, more, just put it on the visa". I'm irked to say the least. These findings have left me disgruntled. Sure faster, better, bigger, or smaller in the case of technology, has it's perks and advantages. I'm not gonna to say that if someone was going to give me an iphone with full subscriptions (free of charge with free paid plan), that I'd say no thanks. Of course I'd give it a whirl. I think it's great that technology is making advances. I still don't think it makes life waay easier and less complicated. But, when one is in my shoes, I find it a little ridiculous to feel forced to make these new adaptions. Especially at since we don't really need a new computer. Its working fine.
Hey Firefox and Blogger (others alike) if you were driving a car that was a few years older than the newest model, and someone left a bunch of tacks on the road with the sharp end up only where you could drive.... you think you'd ditch the car or want the tacks removed? Car works fine, road still drivable. Stinkin tacks are the problem. This decision not to support users like myself is a thorn in my side. Or a tack in the road. If I could simply go around this predicament you've put me in I would but I'm left with very limited options.

My Dear Readers,
Have you had any of these problems? I want to know. The fact that my OS system is to old to download and update the latest version of a web browser - kind of problems?. The fact that Blogger, and I suppose others don't want to support "old technologies" so they can claim they are the most advanced, and pioneer the "super highway" is just not fair to the rest of us. Blogger: Go ahead compete against one another alike, but don't take my usage away. :-/ booo. I know there has to be a cut-off at some point but my computer isn't even a teenager yet.

I don't know what this means my friends? Thanks for being faithful and dropping by to read my blog. Thanks for leaving your comments. I'm afraid I'm lost in a time when computers and technologies were viewed a little differently. I remember sitting in school when the first Apple computer entered our school. I remember it's pale green screen with blinking cursor.
I might just have to bid you good bye. I'm not sure if I'll be able to log in from my home computer again in the future?? Guess my Mac is "old" in the computer world (only 5 1/2 years old) My little Mac OS x 10.4.11 just can't keep up with the times it would seem. It's 3:02 AM so I'm going to log off now. Where does this leave me on the road of technology , an old rust bucket? I don't know?  God help me I'm so aggravated.

Happy Blogging if you still can!

New Chapters

So good things to come to an end I guess at one time or another. Poo, poo, two of my good friends who also happen to live in my neighborhood are moving. One up the street, one down the street. First we became friends. Than we moved into the same neighborhood (a block away from one another) One moves next week and another TBA but soon. For the latter it's more dependent on the sale of their house in regards to actual timing. Both have great things awaiting them. New life prospects like new jobs, new churches, new adventures all around. I will miss both of them. It's been so sweet to grow up as mothers of small children together. My kids played with their kids and their kids played with my kids. We often helped out with childcare for one another. Nothing beats a good friend and even better if they live down the street and up the road. It's been just knowing you're there.

Each of these friends have such rich qualities about them. Each bring a smile to my face when I think of them and their families. One of these friends was even in my wedding as a bridesmaid, aww. So many memories, so many stories. When it hit me I started to cry. Than I started to laugh with joy at the great adventures they are beginning. I'm happy for them, as a good friend aught to be. Still, my friends and neighbors, things will not be the same once relocation has happened. States away, we'll not be able to walk to one another's houses or take walks together with our strollers. It takes me a while to process change sometimes. This is one of those bitter sweet times. I'm happy for both, yet sad because neither can be replaced. Social networking just won't be the same as our ole' familiar face to face conversations and times well spent. My neighborhood will never be the same again. The park down the street will echo their laughs as memories are recalled. Ah the emotions of saying good bye, I'm struggling with. I could just cry again when I stop and think of their presence being missed. But why cry? I'll opt for a brighter path of thoughts. I'll cheer them on as they start a new chapter. It's clear in each one of my friends who are departing and relocating; God is moving in their midst on their behalf. It's a good thing He is doing. Thank you God for such good friends who've been blessed with great opportunities for a brighter future. Thank you for the times we've shared. I'm not very good at good byes so I guess we'll just have to say, talk to you later ~ ole friend (s).

To Honor The Mr.

Well, life has been so busy I've been meaning to get in here and blog on so much stuff. Where has the summer gone? I can hardly come to grips that its the end of August already. Are you feeling the same way?

Not to long ago The Mr. was honored with some fellow men and women of law enforcement. I got to attend an award ceremony where The Mr. received 1 Distinguished Service metal, 2 Merit Awards and an Exemplary Service Award!! So now my hero gets to add a little more blig to his uni when he puts on his dress blues. I'm so proud of him! He's a great Cop and I love him both on and off the job. He's our hero both on and off the job but I'd be a poor example of that if I failed to mention his honorable moment in the spotlight :-) on the job.

My little guy is 18 months already! Wow that happened fast! Having two toddlers keeps me on my toes but I'm loving every moment of it!

My daughter is staying doing great but no preschool just yet. We were thinking of preschool since she'll be 4 in December but for many reasons we'll wait until next year. She will have a program that she'll be involved in once a week (with circle time & crafts etc.) and we're going to start her in dance again. Can't hurt to give it another try, so we'll see. So I guess this will be my last year with both kids home during the days. I've advanced to that stage of mothering that doesn't involve baby stuff. It's bitter-sweet. I'm purging and it feels good to give away and sell a little.

I've been a busy gal trying to preserve the freshness of summer. I've branched out from making jam and froze a few tomatoes and other items from our CSA. I've also been making bread, which isn't as hard as I thought it'd be. To say the least I've been a busy gal homesteading :-)

Life is good and I'm ready to embrace the fall!

To coupon or Not to Coupon?

Well as of this past year I can say that my "ways" have really changed regarding coupons.

I use to be a coupon nut, (no, really a frantic, maniac all over the place nut) but now I've found a simpler way to save money {that works for me}.

Let me explain....

There was a day when I'd spend lots of time scanning the web for online coupons; sit down with the Sunday paper coupons and clip away. I'd organize these coupons by date so as to make sure I'd use them in time. If there was a coupon and a sale I'd pounce like a happy kitten. Those days are gone.

So what changed?

I know perhaps you may be big into coupons so I must point out first and foremost, I'm not out to toot my own horn or put anyone down. My blog, so my story. To each their own. This year I've learned by trial and error and in talking with friends, each does what's seemingly best for their families. I just wanted to share my story as to why I'm a recovered coupon nut. If you love coupons I'm not calling you a nut, I was one though.

Some time ago I locked in this great rate for the Sunday paper with coupons at $.50 with delivery. Yeah I know a real steal! We get more out of that Sunday paper by reading it than savings from coupons. The thing is, most of the promotional coupons are for things that we no longer buy. I'll illustrate this way...

-$.50 off coupon for 3 pk paper towels { We don't need these coupons b/c we use eco-towels / reuse and rewash. The wash is something like .30 per load for a weeks worth of towel usage & napkins. Just think how many times you use a napkin or rip off a paper towel from the roll with not much thought. Trust me it's a lot, I've been there.}

-$.75 off National Brand 32 oz yogurt { We no longer buy store bought yogurt. I make 32 oz of plain yogurt here at home with the milk we buy from the dairy farm. The milk is better all grass-fed no hormone and local, so the yogurt is better. Yuck plain you say... we'll put farm fresh blueberries, strawberries or applesauce/ maple syrup/ honey you name it, so plain is never an issue. I make 32 oz yogurt in glass reusable jars for $1.99. Grass-fed yogurt I've compared at Whole Foods was 3.99, almost four bucks!} So we don't need the yogurt coupon because I can make yogurt for almost the amount of savings on the coupon. That's a good savings in my mind.

-$.25 off box of baby wipes { We don't buy because we use cloth wipes and it's much cheaper, 10 cents a load b/c I can do a mini load } Only time we buy is for the babysitter :-) but only equals to one 75 wipe tub for 8 months. Sometimes I need to re-wet them lol.

-$.75 off jar of National Brand jelly {I make all our own jam. This year strawberry and blueberry. We're set for the year. Got the berries fresh, by the flat so was less expensive. Add in labor of love and jam I made cost less to make than coupon offered.

Bread coupons are not needed either because I've recently started making our bread for sandwiches. This decision came from me not liking the ingredient listing AND it's much more expensive for conventional store bought breads even on sale with coupons.Who can argue fresh bread, it's just better all around.

The no need for coupons goes for the housewares department as well

-$ .75 off Glade air fresheners. I make my own air freshener for pennies and it works wonderful!

$1.00 off Lysol all purpose cleaner { Don't need because like the rest I don't use and have found it more economical and eco-friendly to make my own cleaners. Like I make almost all of them: furniture polish, window cleaner, bathroom, kitchen, floor cleaner etc.

We have no need for ice cream, make up, food or household coupons for reasons I've mentioned. Especially now that it's summer and we've ditched the box, prepackaged convince foods. We're eating LOTS of veggies from our CSA and hardly spend much at the supermarket these days. I make all our dinners from scratch so I know what we're eating. I've been dipping into food preservation so we can preserve the best of the harvest in each season. Very much a beginner but I hope to grow in knowledge here. So as you can see I spend little time with coupons these days. The Sunday paper has very little in coupons for us. You can imagine how quick I breeze through the coupon section of the paper. I give away what others want so coupons are not wasted. If I'm not using and others will, no harm in that. So this whole less is more, lack of need for coupons... I think you get the point.

I think you're crazy you say? Isn't it really time consuming to make all those things yourself you ask? Nope. I've got two toddlers and still I've got time for fun. To be honest, looking back I can't say how annoyed I am that I spent so much time searching, clipping, cutting, organizing, purging, coupons combined with sale hunting to match coupon(s) I had... was driving myself crazy with that process. Maybe I just wasn't very good at it. Now I know it's not for me. It only takes a few simple ingredients, mixed with love to achieve homemade cleaners, spin a few extra loads of laundry and save a boat-load of cash. I think of it as reverse earnings, no not spending; rather saving what we don't spend. As a stay at home mother of two toddlers, I don't earn money out of the home for take home. I save as much as possible and that is my "share" of monetary contribution. In my mind, in most cases our family is getting a better product for less. It does take a little bit more time to wash cloth-eco (made of cloth) paper towels, than to put in the cart at Target BUT I look at those paper towels as if they are actual currency. In the garbage they will go. A 30 second pleasure, retailing more than I'm willing to spend, even with a coupon.

Now I'm all about saving money, don't get me wrong this girl love a good deal. I'll only budge if it's something we really need at a great deal. I still keep my eye on prices from time to time. We're able to stay on budget and the savings end of year REALLY add up! I figure this new lifestyle of not spending to save is nothing new. I'm quite sure others are doing it too. Personally, I feel more peace in my day not having to be honed in by coupon expiration dates. Still, I have friends who are quite possibly addicted to couponing. One could say it's the modern woman's gold rush! {for some} They love the hunt for a good deal. They love that instant gratification when the cashier hands them money because they were able to get items for free with their coupons.

I like to believe that I'm saving too but in another way. My valuable time is being spent better. Rather than zooming all over town, from store to store with my kids, blowing gas out of my gas tank to match sale with coupons for potential savings; I can find other savings from home. We can spend that gas on a trip to the park instead (while the bread loaf of bread is cooling).

I'm NOT tooting my own horn here. I just figure there might possibly be someone out there who's coupon light is burning out (like mine was, and did). My aim is to share, there is another way. It might not be my way. This might sound like more work than worth it. Like I said earlier, to each their own.

I'm still a work in process and I'm learning all the time. Little by little we're shredding the scales of industrial big business by not having to buy conventional products. I use to get all giddy when I found a coupon for boxed brownies and got the box virtually for free. Now that I've been making my own brownies and have realized how easy and cheep it is I'll never go back to those boxes that contain lots of items in their ingredient list I'd rather do without. No worries I can attest we're still supporting the economy lol.

To coupon or not to coupon, all the best!

Clean Air!

It's no wonder I love Etsy. Here is a find that I just had to blog about. Yes what you are seeing is a pot / plant neckless. It's green all the way baby! It's actually a wearable avocado plant pictured here. You might laugh but this is right up my ally, lol. Not because of the plant itself, but I love the creative idea. If I were a city gal, I'd totally be sporting this all the way!
For more info click HERE to visit the designer's Etsy shop.

Hope you're having a great summer!

Frankin Fish for Dinner?

I just read (in NY Times) about fish (salmon) being genetically modified for human consumption. Something's very fishy about that. May I ask the question, "Who wants to buy genetically modified fish (created in a lab folks) for human consumption?" Are there huge demographics pointing this is what Americans want? I think not! Plain and simple GM salmon is a stupid idea, and frankly I don't see why money is being wasted for this kind of scientific development (of frankinfish). Why, people? Why? Salmon and meat in general should NOT, I repeat NOT be created in a lab for human (or animal) consumption. Nothing food related should be genetically modified for human consumption.

I bet you if they started enforcing labeling of GMO foods ~ the public would go wild. People's eyes would be opened. More would start to ask questions. Now a pound of meet is a pound of meat (well kinda they're not all the same quality factory farmed vs grass-fed). What if the next time you were at the market, you reached for that pound of ground beef you thought came from a cow off some farm, when in all actually originated from a lab? Would you still want to eat it (or buy it)?

What if next time you question why these days meat is labeled "all natural". I mean if the people went to their local grocery butcher shop and asked for a pound of ground beef, need they make sure to tell the butcher they'd like only the "natural" kind? I did wonder some time ago why it became so popular for companies to market "all natural" meat. That "all natural" actually made me question what I was buying and eating. Had I not been eating natural meat? What is it I had been eating...? Now let's say they started to create GMO beef, there would be a "all natural" section and another section with no special label on it (just a pound of beef, with a price tag). Imagine GMO beef existed (lets face it we're not far off from it) and was sold in the market (due to FDA approval), would YOU buy a pound of that beef even if it had a sticker indicating that it had been genetically modified? Even if that package had an FDA approval sticker on it?

That's why they don't want to approve GMO labeling. Pure and simple it wouldn't sell. And profits would be lost and people would come to realize the truth about our modern foods. That's not a good story for the biotech companies. Genetic modification should not dominate our food sources, but it's trying to.

Look at produce for example, a tomato can be purchased in US year round. It's a seasonal item and sometimes comes from Mexico where the climate is warmer in early spring but December? December is not tomato growing season unless the crop has been genetically modified to be resistant to cold weather etc., etc. You see my point. Genetic modification is nothing short of cell invasion. Big biotech companies have recreated the tomato in a lab. I think cells from a flounder fish should not be in the cells of a tomato, but in GMO tomatoes that's the true story. Without food labeling in place the consumer has no idea. Does this bother you? It should.

Why do big biotech companies do it? $$$ Money$$$. It's big business. Well I'm not shy on the topic. I won't eat salmon ever again if this get's approved. FDA want's to approve this crazy idea. They've already found this GMO salmon safe for human consumption. FDA = Federal Drug Administration. Well FDA, I don't trust you! Your approvals have proven an all time low when it comes to caring for fellow American lives. Here's a way to cut out spending Mr. President; get rid of the FDA (yep I said it) and hire third party (non-partisan, ) companies to do the work. {that's job creation} Let fellow man, care for fellow man rather than big government hide what's really going on. FDA protecting biotech companies due to special interest groups is a sad truth in America today. Can you tell I'm annoyed? It's not directed to you my reader. I'm just venting here.

Let's face it the FDA slaps their approval of waaay to many things without sufficient research. That's why they have so many recalled medications, etc. Than once a problem arises due to lack of research prior to approval they say oh lets look like a hero and create a recall, and point the finger at it's manufacturer and smile at the public. Not working for this girl. When I see FDA approved it carries little weight if any at all. I don't put my life in my government's hands, I put it in Jesus'. I don't want the government to swaddle and coddle. I want it to get out of our pockets and govern sovereignty, with the people's best interest.

I'm excited that the house moved to ban this latest GMO "food" from taking off. It gives me hope that there will be a future with food, simple and pure the way God made it still available for my grand kids (some day). A real thumbs up but still, (and I'll quote from NY Times not trying to infringe on copyright),

"the amendment's ultimate fate is uncertain. The Senate is unlikely to approve the House spending bill unmodified, and it is unclear whether the amendment has the broad support to survive to final passage"

Read the article I'm referring to and find out more about GMO fish (salmon) NY Times article by clicking HERE

People we have a voice. Our vote DOES count. My family deserves the best, your family does too. I'm quite sure "the best" is not lab created foods. I say NO GMO!

All the best!

Food Irritation

90% Sprout Contamination Conventional, Not Organic (Linked to Factory Farm Livestock Production)

Did you see this headline?
Made this a note on my Facebook the other day. (Monday, June 6, 2011 at 5:54pm) Thought it be a good blog post too)

It's not just the US, this newest contamination news comes from Germany. I have to vent....

I grow tired of hearing about food contamination. It's a headline in the news to frequently. Never before in history, as in our modern agricultural days [when just about everything is genetically modified with such an agricultural emphasis of factory farms] have people gotten so sick from what they've eaten. It's starting to catch up with folks and thankfully the "system is starting to buckle". I think that corporate agribusiness has, worldwide, outgrown its ability to control the quality of its products. People are getting sick, even dieing, due men and women with deep pockets and wads of $$ trying to control the food industry at our expense. It's the new battle of this generation ~ who knew? They are not thinking of the consequences of the folks that are sick or even die from these outbreaks. Factory farming just doesn't work long term.

Monoculture-food crops don't work either. Yet such practices don't seem to be improving or changing. When a problem arises in the Agra-business their is no logical problem solving it's "how to make it bigger and better at the bottom dollar for profit sake". At our expense (fellow man). Not to mention they are abusing animals in the process. Wikipedia defines Monoculture like this,

Monoculture is the agricultural practice of producing or growing one single crop over a wide area. It is also known as a way of farming practice of growing large stands of a single species. It is widely used in modern industrial agriculture and its implementation has allowed for large harvests from minimal labor. However, monocultures can lead to the quicker spread of diseases, where a uniform crop is susceptible to a pathogen. 'Crop monoculture' is the practice of growing the same crop year after year.

When a seed is GM to grow at humans demands due to scientific alteration and it's crop takes over what use to be standard farming practices it's Monoculture Farming.

Does anyone remember what happened during the great potato famine? It wasn't a lack of great scientific knowledge, nor the lack of modern farming equipment, it was result of growing one breed of potato. It was the ONLY potato grown to feed the population (and this is happening again today). When that spud crop suffered and all the people relyed on it as food, they too suffered horrifically. The death toll was a huge devastation to the Irish. That's exactly where GMO crops are headed. Check your history, in other parts of the world at the same time the Irish were suffering from their blight, other people groups in Peru didn't suffer so much because they had multiple potato variety plantings. When one planting or variety went bad or suffered a blight the other supd varieties that carried the population's nutrition. Modern day farming concentrates on their one GM crops and sticks with certain varieties. The french fry demands from our cravings primarily drive this monoculture supud crop planting. It's not just supds/ potatoes it's almost everything. Corn is another huge example. Most of our land in USA is farmed for corn. This corn isn't harvested for human consumption, it's for feed lots. Ironically the modern corn farmer isn't growing a sustainable crop that can be eaten by the farmer who grows it. It will never go to their or their neighbor's table, it will go to feedlots and feed cattle, pig and even chickens.

My two cents, God made the food cells, so stop messing with them and let God grow what he made. Start "farming" again the traditional way before monoculture and GMO domination.

The heavy push to feed more people for less money has driven the factory farming business from corn that feeds animals (which were never designed to live on) to the meats we eat, in turn changing the whole broad way of modern agriculture. Our culture in a way is praising convenience on a high note and paying the consequences for fast food. People are not getting healthy from eating a burger with the works for a buck off some dollar meal, yet it's become a way of life for many. I'm not trashing anyone, hey I'm guilty of taking advantage of the dollar menu pleasure in my past. Now that I've got a bigger picture on these things I can't ever go back. The Mr. works midnights and has gotten an organic Newman's coffee from time to time but hates that his dollar is still supporting big arches.

I did just read that Monsanto and others in the seed genetic alteration business are tapping into as many seeds as possible from our Nations seed preservation bank (in Washington D.C.) . This way they can "own" the food we eat. Once genetically modified they pull a patent on the crop. Than when organic fields get contaminated from chaff blowing off the GMO crops, the GMO farmer seed owners can sue the pants off organic farmers and claim "check mate". Is anyone bothered by any of this?

The whole thing is quite political. Many politicians are business men and women who come from big food business companies who in turn protect their private interests. It's all connected and somehow not being written in our school history books, hmmm. Such a dirty thing. Oh yes, he or she will display themselves as a modest business man/women who's in touch with the middle class which is far from the truth. It's no wonder my letters to our politicians don't seem to have much of an impact. The Mr. gets quite angry about the political side of this food war. He's a very patriotic guy but has declared war on this debate. We are very particular what we eat and spend our dollar on (which is our way of voting no for GMO). Just think of the impact we could have, if in one hour, one million Americans in one single day, said NO to fast food and yes to organic. Than the next day it went to two million, than three, than four. I think than someone would stop and notice. They'd first notice a loss of profit but hopefully come to realize that the people are voting with their dollar for organic.

On a positive note the outcome of food contamination problems as well as folks like me who are outraged by modern GMO ~ Monoculture farming have led to exponential growth of local food by family-scale farmers and artisan food processors! There is strong surge in sales at member-owned food cooperatives, farmers markets, CSAs (community supported/subscription agriculture farms) and other farmer-direct marketing vehicles have exploded over the past five years. I'm thrilled to support small organic farming. My dollar in turn becomes my vote. It's my way of sticking it to the big food destroying business men and women.

I've written letters to our governing leaders and signed many petitions on the matter. All those things are important but nothing speaks louder than going to a farmer's market and buying locally grown organic foods and grass-fed meats. Word of mouth is still stronger than advertisement from deep pocketed chains like Mc Ds. They don't even entice my family anymore. Modern media saturates our society with huge persuasion of what American's should eat. Even in the super~mega marts, the persuasion is there. The idea is buy TP, tape and splurg on a rollback at the mega mart, while there pick up a package of ground beef for dinner. When you silence that part of media saturated life, and step onto a farm, listen to the cattle in the field moooing as the wind blows across your face and the sun warms your head; you'd get a HUGE sense of where our food should come from (a real good ole' fashioned farm). I've said it many times, but our kids really love going to the dairy farm and visiting the Jersey cows when we pick up our milk. My three year old says, "Mama they make my milk". I know it's not possible for everyone across America to have this opportunity but Farmer's Markets are branching out and popping up as the demand and interest increases. As customers we can ask butchers to carry grass-fed, we can make the request when dining out. They are suppose to be supplying us with what we want. If we make it know that we don't want genetically modified produce or, super rapidly fattened meats from a feed lot things are not to late to change. (I'm still hopeful)

Our CSA starts next week!!!!!! We are so thrilled, can you tell, lol.

A side note, don't waddle in fear. Pray and get as much information about what you're eating as possible. This day n' age seems only necessary to do so. There are lot's of frighting things on the internet one could read about how far these factory farms and monoculture crop farmers are willing to go. I've learned to take it in all in strides and to do my part. I don't meant to shame anyone. There are choices and until this past year I didn't even know they existed. I assumed if the butter I was buying had a picture of a farm it was indeed from a farm. If the meat's said all natural on the package that it was 'good' meat. Than one day I began to question as to why all natural was on the meat package I was buying. Were there packages of fake meat or natural meat on the market that I unknowingly purchased? Remember the beef recall? I started pealing back the layers and the more I dug, the more I became repulsed by the findings. I didn't want chicken dipped in ammonia (to kill bacteria) fed to my family. I had no idea. I think the consumer aught to have a right and know where food is coming from. It's strategically hidden from the public. Just think of the name, Hidden Vally Farm. Precisely my point. There is no farm in the mega mass producing of what the majority of Americans are eating these days. It's a giant mechanical factory moving meats and produce down conveyor belts or meat processing plants. I'm just the kinda girl that's got the passionate side to her, and once finding all that out ~ the flames kept burning. I'm outraged at the blind eyes I had for so many years. Thankfully due to modern media such as the internet and satellite imaging these factory farms can't "hide" anymore. My thing isn't to act out in anger, rather lets just grow good honest food and share with others. Everyone, despite demographics or income deserves good wholesome food. They deserve an honest option at the very least.

Ice Cream ~ scream! It's so good!

The weather is HOT and muggy. I'm not really complaining (well kinda) it's just that we've gone from cold and rain for two weeks to this summery weather. I know I can't really complain because weather around the country has been so harsh to so many. I'm still shocked at the images on the news round the world and our country.

On a more cheery note. I've made up our first batch of ice cream! For a while now I've tried to say no to the one thing not so good for me, food items. Ok one of many. But I can't seem to stop craving ice cream. As I'm on this journey to eat more whole foods and swipe out of our lives the fake not so good for us ingredients, I found myself on a little journey figuring out how to make my own batch of ice cream.

I'll confess that I don't really have the time to do a tutorial. When I was researching on how to make ice cream I came across this great little video. So why recreate the wheel? I'm offering the tutorial that I go by here on my blog. (see below)

I'm one of the privileged who have a Kitchen Aid mixer, and with that I have the ice cream attachment. I guess ice cream makers don't go for that much but the selling factor for me was storage. I got the seventy-something dollar Kitchen Aid mixer ice cream attachment, oh years ago. The thing was sitting in a box for nothing short of 4 years until last week. I'll say it makes the best ice cream I've ever tasted. It's probably not the attachment. It's probably the fresh real ice cream ingredients.

We buy our milk from a local dairy farmer who breeds Jersey Cows. Their milk is a little bit richer than Holstein (black & white cows). It's richer but lower in fat I guess. The heavy cream is not homogenized (so I shake it up). But, the ice cream is AMAZING! It's soooo creamy. We do make the Philadelphia style rather than the French mostly because I don't want the kids eating raw eggs. Having said that, it melts very quickly because it has no binders. No fake stuff either. Just milk, cream, sugar and vanilla or whatever flavoring we want to go with. I store ours in a glass Pyrex bowl because it came with a lid and is freezer safe. Now aside from the extra fat added to my diet, I don't feel bad eating ice cream again. There's also the fun I have when my daughter pulls up the stool to help her Mama with the mixer. Because it's such a simple recipe she can feel like she's making the ice cream. No doubt, it's a winner with the kids and The. Mr.

Enough words. Watch the video below (it's not me) and you'll be driven to make your own ice cream this summer. Mmmm!

Cheers!
